Support LGBTQ+ Equality: Pass the Equality Act
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a landmark achievement in American history — but it left out protections for millions of people. Today, LGBTQ+ Americans can still be legally fired from their jobs, denied housing, refused service at businesses, or harassed in the workplace simply because of who they are or how they identify. In 27 states, there are no strong local laws to fill this gap, leaving a large portion of the country without meaningful recourse against discrimination.
Congress has an opportunity to fix this. The Equality Act (H.R. 15 / S. 1503) would update existing federal civil rights law — including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The bill would extend these protections across employment, housing, public spaces, and federally funded programs, bringing LGBTQ+ Americans under the same legal umbrella that protects other marginalized groups.
The urgency is real. Recent court decisions have raised questions about the scope of LGBTQ+ protections under existing law. While Congress took a meaningful step forward by passing the Respect for Marriage Act in 2022 to protect same-sex marriage, that momentum must continue. Codifying nondiscrimination protections into federal law is the next critical step to ensuring that every American — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity — can live, work, and move through the world with dignity and legal protection.
