Stop the Dismantling of the Department of Education
Since taking office, the Trump administration has aggressively moved to reduce the Department of Education — a goal outlined in Project 2025. While eliminating a federal agency requires an act of Congress, the administration has been systematically dismantling its programs and workforce while sidestepping congressional oversight. Plans are underway to scatter the department's responsibilities across other agencies: international programs to the State Department, K-12 education to the Labor Department, and child care and special education to Health and Human Services.
Under the so-called 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' the administration has proposed redefining certain professional degree programs — including those for nurses, educators, physician assistants, and social workers — in a way that would reduce federal student loan caps for those fields. Meanwhile, the team responsible for overseeing special education services for 7.5 million children with disabilities was nearly eliminated during the government shutdown, and entire offices handling civil rights enforcement and Title I funding for low-income schools have been gutted.
The consequences of these actions are far-reaching: slashed federal funding for public schools, weakened protections for students with disabilities, the end of civil rights enforcement in education, and the erosion of student loan and workforce development programs that millions of Americans depend on.
Congress has the power and the responsibility to push back. Lawmakers must conduct oversight of these actions, block any funding bills that enable further cuts, and stand up against policies that threaten to privatize and defund public education in America.
