Demand ICE Oversight and Accountability
Reports from ICE detention facilities and communities across the country raise serious concerns about the treatment of immigrants, U.S. citizens, legal residents, and children in federal custody.
According to documented accounts, ICE enforcement operations have resulted in the detention of U.S. citizens, in some cases reportedly due to racial profiling. Conditions at certain detention facilities have been described as unsanitary and medically inadequate, with children among those affected. Letters written by detained children describing their living conditions were reportedly confiscated during an operation at the Dilley detention facility in Texas. Over 510 identifiable human rights violations have been reported at ICE facilities.
In Minnesota, two individuals identified as U.S. citizens — Renee Nicole Good and Alex Jeffrey Pretti — died during encounters with ICE agents. A separate incident in Los Angeles involved the death of Keith Porter Jr. at the hands of an off-duty ICE agent. ICE leadership has characterized these incidents as acts of self-defense; critics and advocates have called for independent investigations. Reports also indicate that legal observers, peaceful protesters, and bystanders have been subjected to use of force during enforcement operations.
Enforcement actions have been concentrated in several Democratic-led cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and New Orleans, as well as in specific ethnic communities. Green card and citizenship application processing from 19 countries has reportedly been paused, and citizenship ceremonies have been canceled in multiple locations. Thousands of individuals arrested during recent operations have not been accounted for in public records. ICE has also expanded its use of surveillance technologies, including facial recognition, phone extraction tools, and license plate readers.
Congress has the authority to conduct oversight of federal agencies, investigate allegations of misconduct, and make appropriations decisions. Constituents are encouraged to contact their U.S. Representative and urge action on ICE oversight, accountability for use-of-force incidents, and review of detention conditions.
