Oppose the SAVE America Act — Don't Block Eligible Voters
Congressional Republicans have made the so-called SAVE America Act one of their top legislative priorities. The bill — formally known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (H.R. 22 / S.128) — would require Americans to present documentary proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot. The House passed the bill 218–213, and the Senate is now considering it.
The problem? Tens of millions of eligible American citizens simply don't have easy access to these documents. Over 21 million Americans lack ready access to proof of citizenship. More than 140 million don't have a passport. Nearly 69 million women who took their spouse's last name have a birth certificate that no longer matches their legal name. Transgender individuals, elderly Americans, disabled voters, military members stationed abroad, and citizens of color are all disproportionately affected — with people of color being three times less likely than white citizens to have the required documents on hand.
Supporters of the bill claim it's necessary to prevent voter fraud, but there is no credible evidence of widespread non-citizen voting in U.S. elections. Independent experts, election officials from both parties, and civil rights organizations agree that this kind of fraud is extraordinarily rare. What the SAVE America Act would do is make it significantly harder for millions of fully eligible Americans to participate in democracy.
