Oppose KOSA & the KIDS Act — Don't Let Congress Censor the Internet
Congress is once again pushing legislation that claims to protect children online but could end up restricting legal speech for everyone. The latest version, H.R. 7757 — known as the KIDS Act — passed the House Energy & Commerce Committee in March 2026 and includes an updated version of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). It now heads toward a full House vote.
While the bill's sponsors say it safeguards minors from harmful online content, critics across the political spectrum warn that its language is dangerously vague. A previous version of KOSA passed the Senate in 2024 but stalled in the House over concerns it could be used to silence political viewpoints. Rather than addressing those concerns, the new KIDS Act removed a key 'duty of care' provision that would have held tech companies accountable for their design choices — and added preemption language that could block states from passing their own, stronger protections.
The real danger lies in enforcement. KOSA would be interpreted and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Faced with broad and vague statutory authority, tech companies would likely censor content preemptively — chilling free expression far beyond anything targeting actual harm to children. Content related to abortion rights, gender-affirming care, and other contested political topics could be swept up in enforcement actions.
'Protecting children' has historically been used as political cover for restricting speech. H.R. 7757 does little to hold big tech accountable while opening the door to government-directed censorship. Call your representative today and urge them to oppose this bill.
