Demand a Farm Bill That Protects People, Not Polluters
Congress is working to pass H.R. 7567, the first full reauthorization of the Farm Bill since 2018. This sweeping legislation shapes everything from farm subsidies and crop insurance to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which millions of Americans depend on for food security. But as currently written, the bill contains several deeply troubling provisions — and it fails to address urgent needs for working families and the environment.
Among the most concerning elements: the bill would block USDA funding for most solar panels, cutting off farmers from a growing and profitable source of renewable energy at a time when fuel and fertilizer costs are already straining agricultural budgets. It also includes the so-called "Save Our Bacon Act," which would prevent states from regulating out-of-state livestock sales — effectively nullifying California's voter-approved Proposition 12 and stripping states of the ability to set their own animal welfare and food safety standards. (Note: a separate provision that would have shielded pesticide manufacturers like those producing glyphosate from consumer lawsuits was removed before the House passed the bill 224-220.)
Critically, the bill does nothing to roll back the devastating SNAP cuts passed in last year's H.R. 1 budget reconciliation bill. Those cuts haven't fully taken effect yet, and the Farm Bill represents a real opportunity for Congress to step in before millions of low-income Americans face a hunger crisis. Failing to act now means waiting until it's too late.
The Senate now has the chance to fix what the House got wrong. Constituents across the country should urge their senators to demand a Farm Bill that supports renewable energy for farmers, safeguards animal welfare and food safety, and protects the nutrition assistance programs that vulnerable families rely on.
