Defend Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, nestled in Southern Utah between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, is one of America's most treasured public lands. Spanning nearly 1.9 million acres, it was designated a National Monument in 1996 and is celebrated worldwide for its extraordinary paleontological record, breathtaking landscapes, and rich, intact ecosystems. It also serves as an economic engine for surrounding communities — and a full 74% of Utahns support keeping its National Monument status intact.
That protection is now under threat. In March 2026, Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT-02) and Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced joint resolutions — H.J.Res. 151 in the House and S.J.Res. 109 in the Senate — invoking the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to strike down the monument's Management Plan. This plan governs everything from recreation and camping access to collaboration with Tribal Nations, dark sky preservation, and grazing. If these resolutions pass by simple majority, the Management Plan would be nullified — and federal agencies would be permanently barred from issuing any similar plan in the future.
The stakes go beyond Grand Staircase-Escalante itself. Using the CRA to dismantle a public lands management plan would set a dangerous precedent, opening the door for Congress to gut protections for public lands across the entire country. What happens here could determine the future of America's public lands heritage.
