Contact Your Rep: Share How Government Policies Are Affecting Your Daily Life

Your members of Congress don't just vote on legislation — they're also responsible for hearing directly from the people they represent about how government actions (and inactions) are affecting everyday life. This is called constituent services, and it's one of the most important and underused ways to make your voice heard.

Right now, millions of Americans are feeling the effects of federal policy in very personal ways. Tariffs are driving up the cost of groceries, gas, and clothing. H.R. 1 — the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" — threatens access to affordable health care, student loans, and clean energy for countless families. Immigration enforcement actions have created fear in communities and disrupted local businesses. Federal layoffs and economic uncertainty are slowing the job market, and changes to Social Security staffing have made it harder for recipients to access the benefits they've earned. These are just a few examples of how Washington's decisions ripple into people's daily lives.

You don't need to cite a specific bill number or policy to call your representative. If something is making your life harder — rising rent, a shortage of teachers or child care providers, loss of a local program, reproductive care access, student loan struggles, or anything else — your representative needs to hear about it. Their job is to understand what's happening to the people in their district and to act on it.

Calling your representative to share a personal concern is one of the most powerful things you can do as a citizen. Congressional offices track constituent contacts and respond to volume. Your story matters — pick up the phone and tell it.
