Pass TPS for Haitians Now
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals is set to terminate as early as July 24, 2026, putting hundreds of thousands of Haitians currently living in the United States at immediate risk of deportation to a country facing severe gang violence, political instability, and a humanitarian crisis.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1689 with bipartisan support, extending TPS protections for Haitians through 2029. The companion Senate bill, S. 4814 — introduced in the 119th Congress — would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to designate Haiti for TPS, extending those protections through 2028–2029. Despite the urgency, the Senate has yet to bring the bill to a vote, and an attempt to advance it by unanimous consent was blocked.
Constituents are urging their U.S. Senators to support and pass S. 4814 without further delay. A Senate vote in favor of this bill would protect long-established Haitian communities, prevent forced returns to dangerous conditions, and affirm the United States' commitment to humanitarian protections under existing law.
